Care Coach 101: What Every Caregiver Should Know

Think about the last time you looked at a GPS or map in an unfamiliar city. There were probably several ways of getting to your destination, and oftentimes, very little indication of the obstacles you’d encounter along your way. Navigating that journey was hard enough, but dealing with it on your own was likely even harder. Caregiving is similar.

Understanding Care Coaching

Caregiving can feel a lot like driving in an unfamiliar city. That’s why we offer care coaching: personalized, 1:1 support for caregivers who need help with:

Think of a care coach like a friend in the passenger seat. Some drivers may need a reminder to take the next turn, while others may appreciate the comfort of feeling less alone. At Trualta, we know that each caregiving journey is unique. A care coach can help you navigate twists and turns, hills and valleys, and bumps along the way.

In this article, we’ll review some key characteristics of the kind of support you’ll receive from a care coach.

Personalized

As a caregiver, you know that managing care is often more complicated than it appears on paper. It can be hard to try to apply your loved one’s unique needs and situation to boilerplate information you read online, or your friend’s advice about their cousin’s stepfather’s brother who had the same chronic conditions.

A care coach can offer personalized support and suggestions for managing your unique care situation and challenges.

Convenient

When something is convenient and simple, we’re more likely to use it. That’s why care coaching is a no-expectations experience that is designed to meet your needs, preferences, and schedule as a busy caregiver. With care coaching, you can get in touch:

  • At any time
  • As little or as much as you want
  • In a way that works for you (via email or 1:1 Zoom meeting)
“Thank you again so much for being flexible and meeting with me. I appreciate your time and the resources you provided. Thank you again!” –Katie, Trualta Caregiver

Self-Directed

One of the unique perks of care coaching is that you’re in the driver’s seat. You take an active role in deciding what kind of support you need. There are no expectations about needing to interact or respond. Care coaching is based on your personal needs as a caregiver, and we’re ready to meet you where you are.

For example, you can use care coaching as:

  • An opportunity to have non-medical questions answered and brainstorm solutions
  • A resource to learn about educational tools and other resources
  • A space to receive emotional support from someone who gets it
  • All of the above!
A professional care coach greets an older man at his front door with a warm handshake. The care coach wears a name badge and carries a bag, signaling a home visit. The friendly exchange highlights the personalized support and guidance provided by care coaches to help individuals and their families navigate caregiving challenges in their own homes.

Solutions-Oriented

A care coach can help you navigate problems and brainstorm solutions that work for you and your family member or loved one. Similarly, they can also help empower you to problem-solve independently. While their suggestions are not medical advice (and won’t replace it), you’ll know that you’re working together to find solutions that work.

So next time a challenge comes up, you’ll feel confident and prepared to tackle it head-on!

Confidential

It’s important to feel secure while sharing a life experience. That’s why care coach meetings aren’t recorded. Everything shared during your care coach sessions or messages is confidential.

Comforting

We know that caregiving means dedication. Sometimes, however, it can be a real emotional challenge. A care coach helps create a safe place where you can share feelings and be heard by someone who gets it.

While care coaches are not mental health professionals, they can offer empathy, emotional support, and related stories to help you feel less alone.
