Standing Up for Caregivers: Trualta Joins AARP and 90+ Organizations to Demand Financial Relief

Caregiving is one of the most important, and most undervalued, roles in our healthcare system. Every day, millions of family caregivers show up for their parents, spouses, siblings, and loved ones, often at significant cost to their own financial security, career, and wellbeing. At Trualta, we have always believed that supporting caregivers is imperative to better health outcomes. That’s why we are proud to add our name to a powerful, bipartisan call to action.

This is Why We Signed On

On March 10, 2026, Trualta joined AARP and more than 90 other organizations in signing an advocacy letter urging Congress to pass the Lowering Costs for Caregivers Act (S. 1565/H.R. 138). This bipartisan legislation has the potential to provide real, immediate financial relief due to the rising costs of providing care in your home.  Family caregivers across the country are struggling to pay their bills because of the added financial burden that comes with caring for others.

The ask is straightforward but meaningful: allow family caregivers with a Health Savings Account (HSA), Flexible Spending Account (FSA), Health Reimbursement Account (HRA), or Archer Medical Savings Account to use those funds for the qualified medical expenses of a parent or parent-in-law, not just their spouse and dependents as currently permitted.

For the millions of Americans in the “sandwich generation,” caring for aging parents while raising their own children, this change could not come soon enough.

The Financial Reality Facing Family Caregivers

We must work together to lower costs. Family caregivers spend an average of $7,200 out-of-pocket per year caring for a loved one; or roughly 26% of their income. Nearly half have experienced at least one serious financial consequence: drained savings, unpaid bills, unplanned expenses or debt, or borrowing from family and friends. Many leave the workforce entirely or are forced to reduce their hours, sacrificing income, retirement savings, and career advancement.

And yet, these same caregivers are quietly saving the health system billions of dollars every year by keeping their loved ones out of costly institutional settings like nursing homes or long term care facilities. The Lowering Costs for Caregivers Act recognizes that something must be done to rebalance expenses.

Trualta’s Role: Turning Advocacy Into Action

Advocacy matters. Policy matters. But caregivers also need practical, day-to-day support right now. That’s where Trualta comes in.

The healthcare ecosystem must push for innovative solutions to drive down costs. At the same time, family caregivers have the power to be key members of the care team in between appointments with a health care provider. How do we help them sustain the journey without burning out?

At Trualta, we support caregivers with skills training and we help them find a community of peers so they never feel alone. When caregivers are engaged on the Trualta platform, the results speak for themselves:

  • 20% reduction in emergency department (ED) utilization
  • 15-month delay in long-term care placement on average, keeping loved ones in their homes longer
  • 91% of those attending a Trualta event agreed that it helped them learn new skills, translating directly into better care delivery
  • 89% of caregivers said Trualta events boosted their confidence which is a powerful, preventative defense against burnout
  • 88% reported improved ability to manage stress, protecting their own health so they can continue to show up for the people they love

These outcomes aren’t just good for caregivers. They’re good for health plans, for Medicaid services and community-based programs. They can expand the reach of care in rural areas and decrease medical expenses for the broader healthcare system. Supported caregivers mean fewer avoidable hospitalizations, better care transitions, and delayed or even altogether avoided nursing home placements.

A Coalition Built for Change

The breadth and diversity of the organizations on this letter reflects just how universal the caregiving challenge is. Alongside AARP, signatories include the Alzheimer’s Association, the Elizabeth Dole Foundation, the National Alliance for Caregiving, Easterseals, the Caregiver Action Network, Fidelity Investments, TIAA, and dozens of patient advocacy, disability rights, and community organizations representing every corner of the United States.

What We’re Asking

We are calling on Congress to include the Lowering Costs for Caregivers Act in any relevant legislation advanced during the 119th Congress. Family caregivers have waited long enough. Investing in caregiver support reduces costs, improves health outcomes, and keeps people out of institutional care. Caregivers don’t just need our appreciation. They need our action.
